After serving four years as general manager of Glenwood Springs’ Grand Dame, Christian Henny is promoted to president by owners of Hotel Colorado.

When hospitality industry veteran Christian Henny took the helm as general manager of Hotel Colorado in October 2017, no one could have predicted what his next four years in the role would entail. The hotel changed hands the following year, which was its 125th birthday, when the Melville family purchased it from Providence Hospitality Partners.

Renovations soon began, and the community gathered in August 2019 to celebrate improvements to and discoveries in six restored meeting and banquet rooms. Original brick fireplaces were uncovered in four of the rooms, Roosevelt, Garden, Taft and Devereux, during the restoration. The annual holiday festivities closed out a strong year.

Then 2020 hit. Hotel Colorado was closed for two and a half due to COVID-19. Once it reopened in early June, it was just two months before the Grizzly Creek Fire shut down I-70 through Glenwood Canyon, cutting off the direct route from the Front Range to Glenwood Springs. Though the hotel stayed open with COVID safety precautions in place, many visitors cancelled their trips until the interstate reopened.

In came 2021 and with it record bookings and the return of events. Hotel Colorado and Glenwood Springs were on the rebound until July rainstorms once again closed I-70 with landslides. Through it all, Henny has remained strong and optimistic, guiding his team through challenge after challenge. Enough so that the Melville family has just promoted him to president.

Henny is an active member of the community, serving as chairman of the board of the Glenwood Springs Downtown Development Authority and on the board of the directors for the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association. During his 34 years in the hospitality industry, he’s worked his way from bell captain to sales and guest services manager to general manager at multiple high-end lodging properties and resorts. His longest stint was at the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa in Riverside California.
